I picked up the Los Angeles Times the other day and lo and behold, there was an article written expressly for me, which puzzled me for a moment as I didn't recall that the editor had even hit me up for advice - but I'm absent-minded that way. I mean, does Warren Buffet even bother to ring the old cell and say "Thanks, dude!" once in a while? No. But wisdom is its own reward, or so the saying goes.
Anyhow, the title of the article was "Wanted: Auto Fanatics - Serious Inquiries Only" and boy was that ever ME -- fanatical and serious about it. So I read on. It seems that a large number of seized cars were to go on auction this week, and that all the cars were open to the general public for viewing before the auction. I did a bit of research and found the following info on the US Treasury Department website (I know - boring, but stay with me):
"Los Angeles, CA - The IRS-Criminal Investigation and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are joining forces to take a byte out of Crime by allowing the public to bid in person or online for an impressive collection of limos, luxury sedans, sports cars, and classic vehicles. The auction represents the first time both agencies will utilize simulcast bidding technology for a vehicle auction, allowing pre-qualified online bidders to bid in real time with those present during the live auction."

There were a bunch of people crowding through the entrance to get a look at the cars, and a number of Federal law enforcement types stationed around the building, but I'd watched a lot of Hong Kong Phooey when I was a kid, so I knew how to take care of myself. I half-expected the Feds to search my camera-bag, but they let me walk right on in without so much as a poke, prod or full-cavity search (though my tighty-whities were fresh, just in case).
I was SHOCKED by what I saw after I entered. Here I was looking at cars like the Lamborghini Murcielago and a Shelby GT500 side by side - and the attitude was so casual that I could climb right in the front seats, slam the doors, pop the hoods, dry shift the trannies (and by that I mean "transmission", you pervs), even request to have the auction workers fire 'em up and rev the motors high just for the sweet, sweet sound of it. I sat myself comfortably in the Rolls Royce, opened and closed the doors a few times on the Lambo, and even pushed every button on several of the Ferrari's like a snot-nosed brat on an elevator.
Sweet.
It was very cool to see these cars up close, plus have the freedom to so completely and casually interact with all their bells and whistles. The two favorites of the day, judging by the reactions I observed, were the Rolls Royce Phantom and The Shelby GT500KR, with the Shelby constantly thronged by groups of admiring older men who barely even noticed that there were other cars at the event. Out of my way, Grandpa - she's too young for you!
My only regret is that you all couldn't be there with me as I hopped, skipped and jumped through the playground of the exotics and the luxuries, but I snapped a bunch of cool pics to share with everyone, so don't feel too left out.
