Tesla says it's working on a 4-door sedan
Sunday Jan 14, 2007 05:05:00 PM
While both BMW and Honda have recently admitted that their much-touted, hydrogen-powered prototype vehicles are decades away from seeing actual production, Tesla Motors, the forward thinking company behind the new all-electric Tesla Roadster, has announced that it's expanding its facilities to the Rochester Hills, Michigan area to start work on the engineering and design process for a four-door sedan/crossover vehicle to complement the company's two-seater roadster. The Tesla Roadster is an all-electric high-performance sports car that can sprint 0-60 in just under 4 seconds, while also boasting a maximum ceiling of 13,500 rpm that enables the vehicle hit 70 mph in first gear (it has two gears, plus reverse).
"We're closing the deal on the building this week," said Martin Eberhard, Tesla Motors' founder and chief executive officer. "We're looking to hire chassis engineers, body engineers and suspension engineers . . . If you want to hire good automotive engineers, you have to come here (to the Detroit area)."
Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are among some of the big technology names behind the funding for the fledgling Tesla Motors, which also include the likes of PayPal cofounder Elon Musk and Jeff Skoll, former eBay president (who now runs his own investment company, Capricorn Management, LLC).
Prototypes of the Tesla Roadster have already hit the street, but the actual production models aren't scheduled to arrive until this summer (2007). As of November 2006, the full 220+ production run of the "2007 1/2" Tesla Roaster model has completely sold out. The four-door sedan, code-named White Star, is expected to make production in 2008.
Here's a link to the unveiling of the Tesla in Santa Monica in 2006. Lots of photos, plus video. If you look closely, you can see the Governator smiling broadly in the passenger seat during one of the Roadster's test runs.
