Round Up
Monday Feb 19, 2007 06:28:00 PM
1.) Pontiac dumps the Grand Prix name -- replaces it with the Pontiac G8. The base model features a 261 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 with 250 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful G8 GT delivers 362 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque thanks to a 6.0-liter V8.
2.) Audi is developing a small sports car, dubbed the R4, to go toe-to-toe against Porsche's popular Boxter model, even though Porsche owns a near-controlling interest in VW, Audi's parent company. Could Porsche be preparing to dump the Boxter in the near future? Hmmm, probably not.
3.) Ford resurrects the Taurus, considered by many to be the car that saved Ford in the 80's, revolutionizing the way that Ford autos looked and felt when it was introduced. There's even a cross-over version in the works, called the Taurus X.
4.) The 2008 Dodge Avenger -- the Charger's little brother. "Our target consumer is age 30 to 35. That is the sweet spot for us," said Tom Loveless, a Dodge Marketing Director. "We are bringing the distinctly Dodge grab-life attitude to the mid-sized segment." The basic Avenger SE model starts at $18,895.00.
5.) BMW plans to offer an 8-speed automatic transmission, currently under development for release by 2009 or 2010. The 8-speed gearbox is expected to improve fuel efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs, with the new generation of BMW 7 series expected to be the first to launch the updated transmission.
6.) The new, spankingly modern Jaguar XF arrives in dealerships in April of 2008. Jaguar execs consider the launch of the XF to be make or break for Jaguar, which is currently lagging in sales and consumer satisfaction. Jaguar's U.S. new-car sales have plummeted from a 2004 high of 45,875 to 20,683 in 2006, so a lot is riding on the new design direction that the XF epitomizes.
