Round Up 2

Thursday Apr 12, 2007 06:56:00 PM

1. The Mini Cooper Goes Electric: "According to company founder Richard Griffiths, the Mini we tested sports a 78kW electric motor, can get up to 200 miles on a charge and recharges in six to eight hours. Inside, the only real changes to the Mini interior are that the back seats are gone (your batteries are now your “+2”) and the gas gauge now reads permanently empty because as far as your vehicle’s instrument cluster is concerned, you have no gas."

2. Does Your Car Make You Look Gay?: In a New York Times article titled, "Gay By Design", the author wonders whether the car you drive says more about you than you might think -- "A few years ago, Meghan Daum, an op-ed contributor to The Los Angeles Times, wrote about a promising first date with a man that never led to a second one because, she later learned, the guy saw that she drove a Subaru Outback station wagon and concluded she must be a lesbian." The Mazda Miata and Mini Cooper were also mentioned . . .

3. Infiniti Announces EX Concept: "The first feature is noticeable from overhead -- the car uses a liquid crystal glass roof that can turn translucent to shield passengers from the sun, or from curious onlookers." The EX will also include Lane Departure Prevention technology that encourages drivers to correct steering mistakes, plus an Around View Monitor that uses a network of front, side and rear-mounted cameras to offer drivers a more complete view of the surrounding traffic.

4. Was He Trying To Be Funny?: Comedian Eddie Griffin crashes a $1.2 million dollar Ferrari Enzo while testing the racetrack before a charity event. There were only 400 Enzos ever built.

5. GM Suspends Imus Sponsorship: "GM and LaNeve have had a warm relationship with Imus. The GM exec has gone on the show a few times to talk about autism, the GM warranty, and other issues. And GM has supplied Imus's ranch for cancer-stricken children with HUMMER H2s and Chevy Suburbans. GM said it still supported Imus's charitable works, but wouldn't advertise on his radio show or the simulcasted show on MSNBC at least until after his two-week suspension is served. After that, a GM spokesperson said, they will re-evaluate."

6. City Tows and Destroys Rare Car: "The car (a 1972 Bristol 411), worth an estimated £30,000 (almost $60,000 US Dollars) and one of just 287 made, was parked by its owner, Mendoza Stewart of Kennington, in a council-run car park in December 2004. When he returned and found it gone, he assumed it had been stolen, but police found that it has been taken to the council pound. A witness reported that when the car was lifted off the tow-truck, a mechanical grab was used, which destroyed it . . . Lambeth council has apologised to Stewart - who had owned the car since 1984, when he bought it after a long search - but as yet has not compensated him for his loss." There were only 287 Bristol 411's ever made.
