Death Race 2007

Friday Apr 20, 2007 10:07:00 PM

The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) released a report that named the Chevy Blazer as the deadliest vehicle on the road, at 232 drive deaths per million vehicles. The average is 79 deaths per million. The Blazer was first named the deadliest vehicle on the road in 2005. The vehicle with the lowest number of drive deaths was the boxy, practical Chevy Astro Minivan.

General Motors spokesman Alan Adler stated in response: "The study doesn't really take into account driver behavior or how the vehicles are used, so it's difficult to really draw much significance."

He has a point -- I mean, it's not like Chevy Astro Minivan drivers are tearing up the asphalt on a Friday night, and the Blazer is a 4WD SUV meant for on-road and off-road fun.

In case you're wondering, the second deadliest on the list was the Acura RSX with 202 deaths per million vehicles, and third was the Nissan 350Z with 193 per million. On the safer end of the spectrum, #2 was the Infiniti G35, #3 was the BMW 7 Series and #4 was the Toyota 4Runner -- all cars my mom would drive (not that there's anything wrong with that). Personally, I like the BMW 7 Series -- rides like a dream, and plenty of leg room, too!

If I were to bet, I'd say it was the driver based on #2 & #3. They are cheap enough and attractive enough for the young American male to get. They also tend to be the ones most likely to get into a car accident.
